Joel Barlow was a man of many talents and accomplishments. He was a diplomat, nation builder, and literary giant who played a significant role in the founding of the United States. Born in Connecticut in 1754, Barlow was a precocious child who showed an early interest in learning. He graduated from Yale College in 1778 and went on to study law. However, his passion for writing and politics soon drew him away from the legal profession.

Barlow's first major work was "The Vision of Columbus," an epic poem that celebrated the discovery of the New World. The poem was a critical and commercial success, and it helped to establish Barlow as a rising star in American literature. In 1788, Barlow was elected to the Continental Congress, where he served for two years. During his time in Congress, he helped to negotiate the Treaty of Tripoli, which ended the Barbary Wars and opened up the Mediterranean Sea to American shipping.
