Hidden in Plain Sight: Why Three Dimensions Is the Key to Unlocking the Mysteries of the Universe
In Hidden in Plain Sight, Dr. Donald Hoffman argues that our perception of reality is fundamentally flawed. We live in a three-dimensional world, but our brains only perceive two dimensions. This discrepancy, he argues, is the key to understanding a wide range of mysteries, from the nature of consciousness to the origin of the universe.

Hoffman's theory is based on the idea of "affordances." Affordances are the properties of objects that make them possible to interact with. For example, a chair has an affordance for sitting, while a table has an affordance for placing objects on it. Hoffman argues that our brains only perceive the affordances of objects, not their actual three-dimensional structure.
This has profound implications for our understanding of reality. For example, Hoffman argues that we do not actually see objects as they are. Instead, we see a simplified, two-dimensional representation of them. This representation is good enough for most of our everyday needs, but it can lead to errors in judgment. For example, we may overestimate the size of an object because we do not see its full three-dimensional structure.
Hoffman's theory also has implications for our understanding of consciousness. He argues that consciousness is a way of accessing the three-dimensional structure of reality. When we are conscious, we are able to see beyond the two-dimensional representation of the world that our brains create. This gives us a deeper understanding of the world and our place in it.
Hidden in Plain Sight is a groundbreaking book that challenges our most basic assumptions about reality. Hoffman's theory is sure to spark debate and controversy, but it is also a powerful reminder that we may not be seeing the world as it really is.
