Nicola Sacco And Bartolomeo Vanzetti, Two Italian Immigrants Who Were Executed In 1927 For The Murder Of Two Men During A Robbery In Massachusetts. Doomed: Sacco Vanzetti And The End Of The American Dream

The Sacco and Vanzetti case was one of the most controversial trials in American history. Two Italian immigrants, Nicola Sacco and Bartolomeo Vanzetti, were convicted of murdering two men during a robbery in Massachusetts in 1920. The trial was marred by prejudice against the defendants and the verdict was widely seen as a miscarriage of justice. Sacco and Vanzetti were executed in 1927, but their case continues to be debated today.

The Trial

Sacco and Vanzetti were arrested shortly after the robbery and murder of Frederick Parmenter and Alessandro Berardelli, a paymaster and guard at a shoe factory in South Braintree, Massachusetts. The prosecution's case against them was based on circumstantial evidence, including the fact that they were seen near the scene of the crime and that they had been carrying weapons. Sacco and Vanzetti denied the charges and claimed that they were being framed because of their political beliefs.

The trial was highly publicized and the jury was selected from a pool of people who were likely to be prejudiced against the defendants. The judge, Webster Thayer, was also biased against Sacco and Vanzetti and made several rulings that favored the prosecution. As a result, the defendants were convicted and sentenced to death.

The Appeals

Sacco and Vanzetti appealed their convictions, but their appeals were unsuccessful. The Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court upheld the convictions and the United States Supreme Court refused to review the case. In 1927, Sacco and Vanzetti were executed.

The Legacy

The Sacco and Vanzetti case had a profound impact on American society. The case raised questions about the fairness of the American justice system and the treatment of immigrants in the United States. It also led to the formation of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU),which works to defend the rights of all Americans.

Today, Sacco and Vanzetti are considered to be martyrs for the cause of social justice. Their case continues to be studied and debated, and it serves as a reminder of the importance of due process and the need to protect the rights of all citizens.

The Book

The book "Sacco and Vanzetti: The End of the American Dream" by Howard Zinn tells the story of the trial and its aftermath. Zinn argues that the case was a miscarriage of justice and that Sacco and Vanzetti were victims of political persecution. The book is a powerful indictment of the American justice system and a moving tribute to two men who were executed for their beliefs.

If you are interested in learning more about the Sacco and Vanzetti case, I highly recommend reading Howard Zinn's book. It is a well-written and informative account of one of the most important trials in American history.
