Hakluyt was born in London in 1552. He was educated at Westminster School and Christ Church, Oxford. After graduating from Oxford, Hakluyt traveled to France and Italy, where he studied geography and navigation.
In 1584, Hakluyt was recruited by Sir Francis Walsingham, the Queen's principal secretary. Walsingham tasked Hakluyt with gathering intelligence on Spanish and Portuguese activities in the New World. Hakluyt traveled to the Americas and Africa, where he met with explorers, traders, and missionaries. He also collected maps, charts, and other documents that would help England to expand its empire.
In 1589, Hakluyt published his first book, "The Principal Navigations, Voyages, Traffiques and Discoveries of the English Nation." This book was a collection of accounts of English exploration and discovery. It was a huge success, and it helped to inspire a new generation of explorers.
Hakluyt continued to work as a secret agent for the Queen until her death in 1603. After the Queen's death, Hakluyt retired to a country estate. He continued to write and publish books about exploration and discovery. He died in 1616.
